With the need for social distancing, new digital platforms must be created to facilitate education and research. Universities in Africa have long seen the opportunities in online laboratories, but COVID-19 is making these online options a necessity.

In a recent article on University World News, Dr. May commented on the effectiveness of digital experiences as comparable to their in-person counterparts.

“Educational research shows that online experiences can be as beneficial to students as those in hands-on laboratories,” he also notes that the digital infrastructure is still in development, but offers promising opportunities in education and research.

The situation brings with it many challenges, but May highlights collaboration between institution as a key for building an effective online system and as a solution for some of the financial hurdles.
