Initial news item:

In these unprecedented times, shifting to online learning has been vital for institutions around the world. Though there has been previous experimentation with virtual courses, the global pandemic has made online classrooms/laboratories essential in order to curb the spread of COVID-19. Remote learning in STEM education has been achieved through the emergence of digitally augmented, remotely accessible, or fully virtual laboratory equipment. Such online labs have provided benefits such as flexibility to students and educators, but have also brought about new challenges.

The Journal of Computing in Higher Education (JCHE) is releasing a special issue that focuses on current trends, critical challenges, and future opportunities for laboratory-based education in the context of online education efforts. They are seeking submissions from researchers and educators across all disciplines to share their work related to instructional design and technology, online laboratories, and virtual experimentation. Due to his extensive research in this area, EETI member, Dominik May, will serve as guest co-editor for the journal and collaborate with colleagues from the University of Missouri and the University of New Mexico. This special issue will combine multiple perspectives focusing on the educational aspects of instructional online lab design, intended learning outcomes, student assessment, and evaluation with the hopes of accelerating the success of online labs in higher education.
