Important Note about EETI Communications!

Only a select few communications will be sent to the entire CENGR and EETI member base: The initial announcement of programs, forum announcements, and announcements about funding opportunities.  For other EETI events (EETIncubator, FLCs, breakfast brigade, book clubs, etc.), we will only send communications to those who opt in.  You can opt in one of two ways:

  1. Sign up to be an EETI member, which includes the ability to select which communications you wish to receive.  To learn more about EETI membership and how to apply, please follow this link: https://eeti.uga.edu/eeti-membership/
  2. Email the contact for the event and let them know you wish to receive communications.  The appropriate contact is specified in the event description on this page.

These changes have been made to reduce email clutter for EETI non-members, and as part of an effort to make the benefits of EETI membership more clear and transparent.  Please email John Morelock (John.Morelock@uga.edu) if you have any questions about these changes!

About EETI

The Engineering Education Transformations Institute (EETI) in the College of Engineering provides a home for the excitement, diverse discussions, and ongoing initiatives in the area of Engineering Education. We focus on building community and shared capacity around the scholarship of teaching and learning that will allow us to improve our own teaching, innovate in our courses and curricula, and conduct empirical investigations to better understand our students’ experiences.

Participants in institute programming include faculty, staff, and students from all schools in the College. We leverage the expertise of our engineering education research faculty to contribute to the shared capacity of the group. Participation in institute activities is open and flexible – everybody is welcome to participate by just being part of the conversation or by getting involved in shared initiatives.

EETI invites all College of Engineering and School of Computing faculty, staff, and graduate students to take advantage of our events and opportunities!

EETI is currently offering the following programming.

If you have any questions about the forum, please email Dr. John Morelock (john.morelock@uga.edu).

EETIncubator

This semester, Dr. John Aliu will host a weekly engineering education research incubator to provide an opportunity for EETI members who are working on a specific idea in engineering education to develop their projects as part of a supportive cohort. EETIncubator sessions will be scheduled based on participants’ availability.

If you are interested in conducting research in engineering education, or attending the EETIncubator, please either (1) apply to be an EETI member and indicate you would like to receive communications about the EETIncubator, or (2) send an email to Dr. John Aliu (john.aliu@uga.edu).

EETI “Breakfast Brigade” (Formerly the “Peer Mentoring Meetings”)

The EETI-sponsored breakfast events are back with a new name!  This is an informal space for faculty to come together at a local restaurant before work and enjoy a sense of community over a nice meal to start the day.  Community mentoring naturally emerges from these chats, but the central purpose is to cultivate faculty community – hence the name change.  This semester, Dr. Mike Yoder will be coordinating the events.

If you did not receive an email from Dr. Morelock that you are already on the mailing list, please email Dr. Morelock (john.morelock@uga.edu) and Dr. Yoder (myoder@uga.edu) to be added to the list and get notifications where and when the breakfasts will take place!

EETI Book Club

This semester, Dr. Alison Banka is excited to facilitate a book club for the book, Teaching and Learning STEM: A Practical Guide, by Richard M. Felder and Rebecca Brent .  The book club will meet on four Fridays this semester during the 2:55 – 3:50 PM class block (approximately monthly).  The first meeting will be on September 11.  To sign up, please email Dr. Banka at alison.banka@uga.edu.  EETI will purchase copies of the book for people who sign up before September!

EETI Library Program

On the north wing of Driftmier’s second floor, we have a shelf filled with books related to engineering education, and College of Engineering faculty, staff, and students are free to check them out (using the check-out form on the shelf) or, for specific books, take a copy to keep.  EETI is interested to continue building this library—if there is an engineering-education-related book you would like us to add, please email Dr. John Morelock (john.morelock@uga.edu) to request it!

Faculty Credentialing Opportunities (!!)

ASEE Registered Engineering Education Pilot

Become one of the first nationally recognized and credentialed engineering educators through the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE)!  ASEE has developed a recognition framework called FRACTAL (Framework for Rewarding And Celebrating Teaching And Learning) that credentials pedagogy-related professional development. This framework is currently being piloted at eight schools, including UGA, nationally.

EETI will be accepting up to 2 engineering faculty fellows to work directly with Dr. John Morelock to develop a custom professional development curriculum over the next year that demonstrates that you have training in the five competencies ASEE considers essential for engineering education excellence:

  1. Designing Learning Experiences
  2. Classroom Environment – Creating a Sense of Belonging, Community, and Related Topics
  3. Assessment and Evaluation Methods
  4. Learning Theories and Factors Affecting Learning
  5. Succeeding in your Role in the Academy

If you are accepted, Dr. Morelock will work with you understand the requirements of the certification, support you in identifying relevant faculty development opportunities to meet these requirements, and create documentation of your achievement.  Once complete, your credential “dossier” will be sent to ASEE provide the official credential, making you one of its first Registered Engineering Educators.  The total expected time commitment is approximately 30-40 hours, distributed over the course of the next academic year.

For the purposes of this pilot, prior professional development will not count toward the credential.  The pilot is meant to test a process, after all!

To apply, please send an expression of interest to eeti@uga.edu briefly describing how being a part of this pilot will benefit you, and confirming your intent to commit the requisite time.  Space is very limited, so please apply only if you are reasonably certain you have the capacity to take on this opportunity!

If you have any questions, please email Dr. John Morelock at john.morelock@uga.edu.

Funding Opportunities

Engineering & Computing Education Conference Travel Fellowships

Our travel fellowship applications will be opening early this year to accommodate a new conference!  We are cycling the Frontiers in Education off the list this year, and adding the computing-focused SIGCSE Technical Symposium.  These fellowships will fully fund successful applicants to attend one of three conferences:

  1. The 2027 American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Annual Conference: June 20-23 in Ontario, Canada
  2. The 2027 ASEE Southeast Section Conference: March (dates TBD) in Lexington, VA
  3. The 2027 SIGCSE Technical Symposium: February 17-20 in Sacramento, CA

All College of Engineering (and School of Computing) faculty, staff, and graduate students are welcome to apply. Priority consideration will be given to lecturers, professors of practice, first-time attendees, and applicants presenting at their conference of choice. The application process will be released and announced to the college in October or early November, with decisions being released by the end of the semester. Please direct any questions to Dr. John Morelock at john.morelock@uga.edu.

Research and Innovation Grants

Applications for the EETI 2026-27 Research and Innovation Grants are open now! The purpose of these grants is to promote a thriving ecosystem of engineering education at UGA. This program is intended to support a diversity of research, instructional approaches, and other innovations that have the potential to improve the experience of teaching and learning engineering in our College.

There is a change to the research initiation grant requirements – starting this year, all applications for a research initiation grant must be co-written with an EETI faculty member.  More details are in the solicitation.  Innovation grants are unaffected.

All College of Engineering faculty are welcome to apply. For more details regarding the grants and how to apply, please follow the link below. The application deadline is Friday, September 11. Please direct any questions to Drs. John Morelock (john.morelock@uga.edu) and John Aliu (john.aliu@uga.edu).
